good timing bro your the best cj cool history bro i hope you can make a video about goryeo after the water margin series thanks
What does the Dark Arts of War mean?
VERY cool, could you maybe cover Admiral Yi next?
Babe wake up, a new water margin episode has dropped
Again great timing for the video FGO just added Huyan Zhou during the most recent Halloween event, also Huang Feihu was added but he wasn't turned into a waifu so less people are searching him up
I feel there was a missed opportunity for a counting gag with all the Wives murdered in this story.
10:02 fun fact There's funny chapter where before Dai Zong went to his journey to search for Gongsun sheng, Li kue insisted he accompanies him while sun jiang kept refusing, Dai Zong only accept it under the terms that he follows his lead and go through special diet where he doesn't eat meat and drink wine, and Li kue agreed these terms
A common trend with Li Kue is that he will make promises that he never keeps so during at the start of their journey, Li kue sneaked off behind a tavern to eat meat and drink wine behind Dai zong, Dai Zong knew he wouldn't be able to keep his promise so he decided to prank him… in the next morning dai zong equipt Li Kue with specialized Tailsman that will have him run in full speed non-stop, while li kue was scared and yelling for help, dai zong convinced him that not going with special diet "might" be the reason wink wink so Li kue while crying admitted to all his lies and promised this time that he will seriously be obediant man from now on
It's fun how this gritty book can often go into comical tone in short period, Li kue getting deserved punishements for his misdeeds
Li Kui is basically murderhobo
5:00 "Sorry for murdering your whole family. Here, marry a rapist." Never change
The Virgin Soy Boy Scholar vs The Chad Outlaw
Love itt
If there's not actual collectable cards of these guys somewhere I am officially disappointed in society.
Thank you man for this summary version of water margin, your series hooked me up with this novel
Was Duan Jingzhou a Tocharian?
When the Water Margin authors are deviously attributed as the Anti-Sunzi/Nega-Sun Tzu
Isn't it such an irony that the Song dynasty, the Chinese dynasty with so many scientific innovations happened to have such superstitious rulers. But at least, they do not oppose science like the Ming and Qing dynasties. Right? Correct me if I wrong but the Ming and the Qing dynasties seemed to behave like science has no meaning.
And is it just me or that the ancient and medieval Chinese peoples are misogynists because they have plenty of side female characters killed for no apparent good reasons?
Loving this series, CJ! Been playing the Suikoden rpg games for years, and I love matching the characters from the novel to their counterparts in the game. A lot of personalities and roles actually line up! Very much looking forward to the next ep! 😀
72th star is a foreigner, is he a uyghur or Turks?
Honestly missed opportunity to cover the adventures of Shi Xiu and Yang Xiong. One of my favorite scenes in the books.
Some highlights: -Yang Xiong becoming sworn brothers with Shi Xiu after watching him throw hands -Yang Xiong spending more time with his sworn brother than his own wife, so his wife gets into an adulterous relationship with a monk -the story briefly stopping just to talk smack about Buddhist monks -Shi Xiu killing said monk alongside the monk's Daoist sidekick before taking their clothes and just leaving their corpses naked in an alleyway -Shi Xiu taking the blood stained clothes and giving them to Yang Xiong, who's first reaction upon seeing the clothes is realizing that his wife is cheating on him despite Shi Xiu explaining nothing
I love how the first major battle in the Water Margin all happens because Shi Qian stole someone's chicken. He even offered to buy a new one! You know any surviving enemies were looking at each other going "mistakes were made".
Gongsun Sheng is another favorite character of mine, and one of the few who gets a relatively happy ending. I like to think that he has a special connection to the Tablet which we saw in the beginning, and later in chapter 100.
Song Jiang’s heavenly book’s redundancy is either an intentional jab, or that the author just got a good ol’ case of “Araki forgot”.
Thanks.
CJ, thanks for doing this series! This one intrigued me since I played Bandit Kings of Ancient China on NES with these heroes against "Evil Gao Qui"! I know the ROTK stuff, but always wondered about this series and their characters!
Another great episode and more good ideas for RPGs items ❤
These corrupt officials sounded more competent than I expected
It's like the Middle Ages Chinese version of Gangs of London.
This is a bit off topic History Bro, but will you ever do a special note about East Asians attitude towards Tattoos? Since Water Margin outlaws, some of the characters there have tattoos like Song Jiang and Wu Chong facial tattoo they received while they were sentenced to jail. In Asian history, people with tattoos always been viewed negatively as "criminals" maybe due to the facial tattoos association.
Why didn't Gongsun Sheng just use his magical abilities during their heist of the birthday gifts? Couldn't he have just knocked out Yang Zhi and his men with magic or something?
